Manorbier Castle was originally an 11th century fortified manor house, founded by Odo de Barri. In the 12th century, William de Barri, founded the stone castle, when adding a great square tower and a fine hall block. In the 13th century, the inner and outer wards were given curtain walls flanked by round and D-shaped towers. The inner ward is almost intact, with a gatehouse, the Great Hall, a chapel and battlements crowning the curtain wall. In the outer ward, are the fragments of the curtain wall, flanked by a tower and the castle, is the birthplace of Gerald of Wales, the great 12th century scholar.
