Newark Castle is a Listed Building. Here's what the official description says about it:

Fragmentary, ruinous and roofless castle, spanning 5 discernible construction periods till 17th century. All rubble-built, with ashlar dressings. Rectangular-plan, with round tower to north east corner, and traces of courtyard walling to west. Medieval castle defined by triple- vaulted section to south: extended to north early in 16th century, with entrance to north west and 4-storey round tower, this section rebuilt above ground floor, with 3 storeys and stair tower to courtyard, probably later in century. Round tower and 16th century house each raised 1 storey in 17th century, and unusual shaped north gable added. Various rectangular door and window openings and some gun ports. Courtyard walls, built in 2 periods (earlier perhaps 16th century), extend towards cliffs to west, and link to ruins of vaulted structure.
