Slains Castle was originally the 16th century stone tower house of Bowness, founded by the Hays. In 1597, the 9th Hay Earl of Errol absorbed the tower house, in the construction of a courtyard castle. The later Hay Earls of Errol, substantially rebuilt the castle over the centuries but sadly it was abandoned by 1925.
